U Teach

UTeach is a joint effort of the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Natural Science and College of Education to recruit and prepare more math, science and computer science majors for careers in secondary teaching.

UTeach offers a compact degree plan that allows students to graduate in four years having completed their math, science or computer science major and the requirements for teacher certification.

UTeach, launched in 1997, certifies more than 70 students per year to be math, science or computer science teachers — more than double those certified prior to the program.

  • Ninety-two percent of UTeach graduates go on to teach immediately and all teach hard to staff subjects — math, science or computer science.
  • Eighty-two percent are still teaching four years after starting, compared with about 60 percent nationally.

NMSI aims to assist more than 50 campuses in adopting UTeach-type programs nationwide. By 2020, more than 10,000 graduates of these programs will have impacted more than 3 million students. View video.
