Are you qualified to take the API QUTE (M) exam?

The API Qualification of Ultrasonic Testing Examiners certification programs (QUTE (M), QUTE (PA), QUTE-TM, and LSP) are open to any applicant that currently holds a Level II or above in one or more of the following: ASNT, CGSB, PCN, or any other ISO 9712 accredited NDE certification. The minimum experience required MUST be documented on your application.

Candidates will need to successfully complete a performance demonstration examination for their specific program.

Exam Content

  1. The API QUTE (M) performance demonstration qualification (PDQ) certification exam assesses ultrasonic technician practical skills at manually applied ultrasonic phased array methods to detect, size, and characterize flaws and features in carbon steel shielded metal arc (SMAW) butt welds.
  2. Weld specimens include, but are not limited to, 0.25 inch to 1.00 inch thick flat plates and 2-12 inch diameter pipes for an approximate total weld length of 75 linear inches.
  3. PDQ exams are hands-on practical exams, using conventional elements (single or dual) in the QUTE (M) exam. Ultrasonic examiners are graded on the following error sources:
    • Missed Detections
    • Missed Characterizations
    • Missed Flaw positions - flaw start and stop positions and total length
    • False Calls
  4. The candidate is provided with an API laptop with electronic forms to document ultrasonic equipment, transducers calibration blocks, ultrasonic system calibration and set-up, and a data report which is saved as a non-editable PDF record at the end of the exam.

The availability of high quality and accurate Ultrasonic Testing (UT) data is often the cornerstone for FFS and RBI decisions, and it is becoming increasingly important for those applications. Therefore in the industry’s best interest, API implemented a Qualification of Ultrasonic Testing Examiners certification program to assist in defining the minimum criteria for assessing the performance of UT technicians.

Exams for these programs are administered differently than other ICP certifications. They utilize the hands-on, performance demonstration testing method.

Certifications included in this program are:

  • QUTE (M) - Manual
  • QUTE (PA) - Phased Array
  • QUTE-TM - Thickness Measurement
  • LSP - Long Seam Pipeline

API Ultrasonic Testing Examiners certifications are valid for three-year terms.
