API 982 - Refractory Inspector

The API 982 certification is designed to identify candidates possessing knowledge of API RP 982 Inspection and Assessment of Refractory Linings.
The API 982 certification raises the bar of competence for qualified inspectors, who must have knowledge of inspection and assessment of refractory linings. It provides the industry with a prequalified set of individuals prepared for the job and readily identifies those who are qualified to for that role.
API 982 certification is valid for a three-year term.
1. Studying For The Exam
- The API 982 Refractory Inspector certification candidate must have knowledge on the inspection and assessment of refractory linings, and of the following:
- Material properties and lining designs
- Defects, Damage and Degradation Mechanisms
- In-Service Inspection Methods
- Quality Control/Inspection and Test Plans
- Repair Methods
- Documentation and Reporting

2. Exam Structure
- The API 982 exam is 4.5 hours.
- There are 165 questions, of which only 150 are scored. The remaining 15 are pretest, which are not scored.
- All questions are multiple-choice and closed-book. Paper and reference materials are not allowed into exams.

Are you qualified to take the API 982 exam?
Candidates must hold an active API 936 certification for at least 3 years.
Prior to submitting an application, please use the table below to determine if you qualify to take the API 982 exam. The minimum experience required MUST be documented on your application.

a Specific Experience in Refractory Inspection Activities — Refers to the quality control elements related to refractory workmanship and/or materials. Alternatively, supervision of refractory installation where the quality control of refractory is under that person’s responsibility. b General Refractory Experience — Refers to installation activities related to refractory work. This may include, but is not limited to, hands-on experience and engineering design. |
- API 982 certification holders need to apply for recertification every three (3) years. Apply online in the ICP Portal.
- You must continue to hold the API 936 certification.
- You may apply for recertification 90 days prior to the certification expiration date, and for a 90-day grace period after. Late fees apply after the expiration date.
- If an application is not submitted by the end of the 90-day grace period, the certification will expire. A new application and fees must be submitted, and you will need to pass a full examination in order to be recertified.
- Circumstances such as heavy work schedule or work in other countries or remote areas do not relieve applicants of the responsibility to file a timely renewal application.
- API 982 certification holders need to demonstrate that a minimum of 20% of time over the most recent three-year certification period was spent performing, inspecting, or supervising refractory inspection.
